Old Hope Valley

Not to be confused with newer areas called Hope Valley, Old Hope Valley is a community in Durham that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was first developed in the 1920s with construction continuing into the 1960s. Built on farmland just before the stock market crash of 1929, what is now known as “Old” Hope Valley sits conveniently close to both Duke University and UNC. Old Hope Valley has 930 homes, many on large lots (up to 4 acres) and some that are estate-sized. The neighborhood was designed with the Hope Valley Country Club as a focal point and many of the homes sit adjacent to its Donald Ross golf course. Homes in Old Hope Valley sell from $250,000 to $5,000,000, with sizes ranging from 1500 to 9000 square feet.

While membership in the Hope Valley Country Club is not a requirement, many residents are members and enjoy its offerings. In addition to the legendary golf course, the club has an active year-round tennis program with seven clay courts and two hard courts. Two swimming pools and several dining options are also popular amenities.

Children living in the Old Hope Valley neighborhood are eligible to attend Hope Valley Elementary School, Sherwood Githens Middle School, and Charles E. Jordan High School. One of the many independent school options is Durham Academy.
