One of the oldest towns in the United States, Hillsborough, not only has a rich history, but it oozes with charm. The Downtown Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, features more than 100 homes, churches, and other structures from the 18th and 19th centuries.


The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough includes 7 organizations that have worked to preserve historic properties and enhance the quality of life. The annual Christmas Candlelight Tour features historically treasured homes. Ayr Mount is a beautiful Federal-era plantation home restored and furnished with period antiques and open to the public. There is even a replica of the Ocaneechi Indian farming village located close to its original site on the Eno River at the edge of downtown. Several Native American tribes made their homes on the Eno around Hillsborough.

The downtown area is vital and offers excellent restaurants, bars, Weaver Street Market, and antique shops. Purple Crow Books, a well-known and well-loved book store, often invites local authors to read and sign their latest offerings. Hillsborough has become a haven for authors well known locally, in North Carolina, and nationally. Another opportunity for shopping is a warehouse outlet for Vietri dinnerware located just outside of town.

Among the galleries and museums are Eno Gallery and Orange County Historical Museum.  The Old Orange County Courthouse circa 1844 is still in use.

Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail (Occoneechee Speedway) is one of the first NASCAR tracks to open and is one of two remaining. Orange County Sportsplex is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the area. Activities include swim leagues, ice hockey leagues, summer camps, exercise facility, and after-school programs. There are several city parks, one of which is Turnip Patch Park, a 1-acre spread which includes a playground, footbridge, and several garden areas. Hillsborough recently completed its Riverwalk in downtown Hillsborough, a section of the Mountains to Sea Trail.
